Cloth, surgical, KN95 and N95 compared
Cloth face coverings vary widely and generally do not provide the consistent filtration and seal expected from an approved respirator. Surgical masks are designed mainly for source control and fluid resistance and usually fit loosely. KN95 and N95 respirators are designed to filter airborne particles when the product is genuine and worn correctly.
N95 is a US NIOSH approval class. KN95 refers to a Chinese performance standard. The name alone does not prove quality, fit, or authenticity, so sourcing and labeling matter.
When a particulate respirator may help
A respirator becomes more useful when particle pollution is elevated and exposure cannot be avoided, such as an essential commute, outdoor work, dust event, or forest-fire smoke episode. Sensitive people may choose protection earlier based on official guidance and medical advice.
The first options remain reducing time, reducing exertion, increasing distance from the source, or moving to cleaner air. A respirator is one layer, not permission to stay indefinitely in hazardous conditions.
How to get a better seal
- Place the respirator over the nose, mouth, and chin
- Shape the nose piece with both hands if the model includes one
- Adjust straps so the respirator sits firmly without painful pressure
- Check for air leaking around the edges when inhaling and exhaling
- Try a different size or model if a stable seal is not possible
Facial hair and fit
Beards, stubble, jewelry, and hair that cross the sealing area can create leak paths. Tight-fitting respirators work best when the sealing surface contacts clean-shaven skin. A different protective approach may be needed when facial hair cannot be removed.
Reuse and replacement
There is no single reuse duration that fits every product and environment. Follow manufacturer instructions. Replace a disposable respirator if it becomes wet, visibly dirty, damaged, contaminated, harder to breathe through, or unable to maintain its fit. Store a reusable item as directed in a clean, dry place without crushing it.
What N95 and KN95 respirators cannot do
- They do not supply oxygen
- Standard particulate models do not protect against every gas or vapor
- They cannot remove pollution already present indoors
- They do not replace evacuation or official emergency instructions
- They may be difficult for some people with heart or lung conditions to tolerate
Children and people with medical conditions
Many respirators are designed for adults and may not seal on a child's face. A poor fit gives less protection, and very young children may not tolerate a respirator safely. People with breathing or heart conditions should discuss respirator use with a qualified clinician, especially if breathing resistance causes discomfort.

A commuter who must travel beside heavy traffic during a PM2.5 episode may reduce particle inhalation with a genuine, well-fitted respirator. Moving away from the road, avoiding the busiest time, and shortening the trip still matter because no mask provides complete protection and common particulate respirators do not filter all gases.
